Vic: Government acting decisively on wheat virus, McGauran
MELBOURNE, April 30 AAP - Federal Science Minister Peter McGauran today said the governmenthas acted decisively to respond to a wheat virus scare which threatened Australia's lucrativegrains industry.
"The prospect of the virus spreading into the crops is a frightening and alarming thoughtfor wheat growers," Mr McGauran told reporters in Melbourne.
"The government has acted decisively and enacted the disease emergency program to combatthe possible spread of the virus out of the laboratories and in Canberra and Adelaide."
The plan was activated last night to control the wheat streak mosaic virus, first detectedat two CSIRO sites in Canberra and then in Adelaide.
Mr McGauran said there was no evidence it had spread further.
"We have no evidence it is in the field," he said.
"That's why we have undertaken a very widespread and comprehensive sampling, particularlyin the more vulnerable areas."
